?Johann Philipp Wetzke

Very little is known about the composer of this Missa brevis and a second such work that survives at the Landeshauptarchiv Sachsen-Anhalt, Abteilung Dessau, where the most substantial remains of the court music collection of Anhalt-Zerbst (where Johann Friedrich Fasch was Kapellmeister) is held. The missing Alto part was easily reconstructed using the oboe 2 part and filling in gaps in the harmony in solo episodes.

Johann Philipp Wetzke was born around 1705 at Gottleube bei Pirna. Having attended the Kreuzschule in Dresden and then studied Theology at Wittenberg, he became Kantor and Musikdirektor at the Pfarrkirch zu Wittenberg. He died in 1767, leaving no published music

Full score

This short mass consists of settings of the Kyrie and Gloria only, as was the custom in Zerbst. Only on special feasts was a concerted setting of the Credo added - Christmas, Easter and Whitsun; otherwise the Credo was integrated into the service as a chorale. The missing Alto part of the surviving source material for this work was easily reconstructed using the oboe 2 part as a basis and filling in gaps in the harmony in solo episodes.
