This edition (based on the famous "PARTITUR Buch", a collection of chamber music compiled by Jakob Ludwig, presented to his employer the Duke August of Brunswick and Lüneburg in 1662) was commissioned by Philip Thorby. It is written in the "patchwork" style in which the various sections contrast meter and character.

Copied in the early 18th century, this setting of the Kyrie and Gloria movements of the mass was originally conceived for 2 tenors, 2 violins and continuo. The copyist added an optional bass (essentially a texted version of the continuo line) and then a third violin part that can substitute for the upper tenor voice and octave higher.
