Max says of these pieces: "Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies for piano are probably his best-known works, both in their original form and in Debussy’s 1897 orchestrations of two of them. I came across the piano pieces for the first time in the summer of 1966. They inspired me to write my own to honor the 100th anniversary of Satie’s birth.

"Originally conceived as piano solos just as Satie’s were, I decided to orchestrate them in 1968 after hearing Debussy’s orchestral arrangements. Having remained tucked away in a box for over 50 years, they were revised for publication in 2022."
