The winners 2022

This year's challenge was to compose a short piece for the same group of instruments as Telemann used in his "Paris" quartets – flute, violin, gamba and continuo. The three winning compositions really could not be more different:

Spanish-born Isidro Albarreal is a passionate musician, specialising in early music and historical performance of the violin and viola, currently based in The Netherlands. His composition – the title translates as "The Sparrow" – is a contrapuntal exercise of great lyricism.

As well as presenting the score in modern notation, the edition also includes the composer's own typesetting in an old-style font, mimicking Bach's handwriting.

Swedish composer Erik Valdemar Sköld also won in 2020. This work is arguably the most modern in outlook, focussing on "overlapping lines and textures... to describe the dissonance that exists between humanity and the environment".
